Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project Update

Three upcoming weekend closures are scheduled for June 7, June 14, and June 21. During these temporary closures, the tunnel will close on Fridays at 11:00 p.m. and reopen to traffic on Mondays at 5:00 a.m.

Summer 2024: Full Closure

The Sumner Tunnel will be closed seven days a week from July 5 until August 5. The mitigation plan includes the following:
  • The five bus routes in Chelsea (111, 112, 114, 116, 117) will be fare-free during the full tunnel closure. The SL3 will be fare-free at the stops: Airport, Bellingham Sq, Box District, Chelsea, Eastern Ave.
  • Zone 1A ($2.40) fares from Salem and Swampscott Commuter Rail.
  • Discounted tolls will be provided for the Tobin Bridge and Ted Williams Tunnel for those registered in the Resident Discount Program.
