Tenacity Summer Tennis & Reading Program
Part time Position (age 18+) - $18.50 per hour

SUMMARY:

The City of Chelsea is seeking part-time Reading Coordinator to assist with Tenacity - a free Summer Tennis and Reading Program open to any Chelsea resident ages 6-12. Morning and Afternoon Sessions are available. Tenacity’s six-week program has two, three-hour sessions Monday through Friday, July 5-August 11. Session One is from 9am-12pm and Session Two is 1-4pm at Voke Park, 540 Washington Avenue, Chelsea. The tennis component of the program is games based and is designed to develop participants into functioning tennis players while emphasizing fun. The academic piece of the program is designed to keep youth reading over their summer vacation so they maintain important literacy skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and lead daily reading activities to ages 6-15 following the Tenacity Summer curriculum
  • Lead all administrative tasks at site: attendance, time sheets, incident reports, communication with families, and other tasks as requested
  • Must report on-time and ready to work Monday-Friday from 9am – 12pm OR from 1:00-4:00pm for six weeks from July 5 until August 11 + a short training week in late June.
  • Participate in overall site organization, planning and activities
  • Share enthusiasm for reading
  • Utilize literacy resources available – books, magazines, writing supplies, etc.
  • Help manage and provide leadership for junior staff volunteers
  • Lead by example at paid staff training during the last week of June
  • Communicate effectively with parents of participants as needed
  • Communicate closely with Tenacity leadership each day and responsible for overall safety of site and supervising junior staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Strong candidates for this position will have the following characteristics:
  • Passion for working with youth and for reading and literacy
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Excellent judgment and problem solving skills
  • Able to listen to students needs and questions
  • Able to maintain calm in all situations
  • Ability to co-lead an entire summer site
