HOUSING CODE ENFORCEMENT INSPECTOR

Pay/Salary: Grade 11 Union: SEIU
Annual Salary: $53,286.06 - $68,740.63
SUMMARY STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Participate in the housing inspection and enforcement process for the City of Chelsea (“City”). Perform responsible technical and administrative work in the enforcement and compliance of municipal laws, standards and regulations. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Housing Code Enforcement, conduct all tasks involved with the inspection and enforcement related to all applicable codes. Perform inspections, issue citations and violation notices to property owners and tenants for applicable City, state, and federal codes. Conduct follow-up inspections in a timely manner. Ensure proper information, interpretation, and explanations concerning the City’s code enforcement policies and procedures are accomplished satisfactorily to applicable City staff and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Education or Training in Building and/or Housing field highly preferred.
- Lead Determination License highly preferred; or must obtain a Lead Determination License within six (6) months of obtaining position.
Experience, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Minimum five (5) years of prior professional work in municipal and state housing inspections required. In lieu of these credentials, experience as a private home inspector or a community property manager will be considered.
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, practices, rules and regulations, procedure and operation of code enforcement.
- Knowledge of applicable state sanitary codes, housing municipal laws, standards, regulations and public safety codes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions, find solutions to problems, and able to work collaboratively as a part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Experience and proficiency with various database/software programs for data entry and generating reports.
- Valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
- Possess and maintain a registered and insured vehicle.
- Ability to climb several flights of stairs, access basements and attics, climb ladders, etc.
- Sole responsibility to prepare and case manage Housing Case Compliance duties from inception to completion.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and staff.
