Tuberculosis

A germ called Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis (TB). This germ can spread from person to person through the air. Tuberculosis can be active or latent.

  • Active TB or TB disease means the TB germs are active and are capable of spreading germs to others. People with active TB have symptoms.
  • Latent TB or TB infection means the TB germs are “asleep” and are not capable of spreading germs to others. People with latent TB do not have symptoms.

The Public Health Nurse, in accordance with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) requirements coordinate management of tuberculosis cases. The Public Health Nurse will perform a range of functions in the care and follow-up of individuals with TB and assuring compliance with the treatment plan until treatment has been completed.
