This article is also available in Español. We have all been watching a new strain of coronavirus that is spreading among people in Asia and in several other countries. We have been informed of some travelers returning to the United States from Asia were infected with this contagious coronavirus. While the risk of this illness remains very low in Massachusetts, following the same steps you usually take to prevent a cold or other germs are advisable. Practice these simple but important habits that reduce the spread of germs:
Cover your mouth and nose with your flexed elbow or with a tissue when coughing and sneezing.
Wash your hands often. The key is to wash thoroughly with warm water and to wash frequently.
When washing your hands is not possible, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes.
If you feel ill, call and follow your medical provider's advice.
The Centers for Disease Control and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health will continue informing municipal public health agencies on any new developments. They will also continue to assist the local health care system, response agencies, and the public as the situation unfolds.
