Recycling Instructions

Here are instructions for recycling the following items: Paper, Containers, Yard Waste, Christmas Trees, White Goods & CRTs, Mercury Devices, Propane Tanks, Rechargeable Batteries, Paint, Motor Oil, and Hazardous Waste.


  • Newspapers/inserts
  • Magazines, phone books, junk mail, paper bags, white or colored office paper, envelopes (windows ok)
  • Manila envelopes & folders, NCR & fax paper 
  • Paperboard (cereal, shoe boxes, etc.)
  • Corrugated cardboard

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
  • Place items in a separate bin or in a paper bag 
  • Flatten corrugated cardboard and cut down to 3ft by 3ft. Place neatly next to recycling bin
  • Staples and paper clips ok
  • No Plastic Bags
  • No soiled paper
  • No carbon/ waxed paper
  • No trash (tissues, food wrappings, etc.)
  • No wax-coated cups, ice-cream cartons, or take-out food containers


  • Glass bottles/jars
  • Aluminum, tin/steel cans and lids and aluminum foil
  • All Plastic Containers - labeled 1 through 7

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
  • Place all items together in a recycling bin
  • May flatten items
  • No plastic bags
  • No broken or other glass such as light bulbs, window or auto glass, dishes, glasses, Pyrex.
  • No paint or aerosol cans or other metal items.
  • No unmarked plastic.
  • No motor oil or chemical containers

Yard Waste

  • Leaves, grass and other easily raked material

Do Not Include
  • Place items in paper yard bags or loose in barrels
  • Spring curbside collection dates to be announced

Christmas Trees

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
DPW will pick up curbside on regular scheduled trash day. Last week of December through January

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
  • Purchase Sticker for $25.00 per item  for White goods and $45.00 per item for computer monitors and television at City Hall Customer Service & Collections Department, Rm. 213 and be placed on the list for pickup on the day of trash pickup.
  • Place sticker on each item to be collected.
  • Remove all doors
  • Place on sidewalk off of property before 7:00 AM on day of trash pickup.
No Auto Parts

Mercury Devices

  • Mercury Thermometers (exchange program)
  • Thermostats
  • Button Batteries
  • Other Mercury devices
  • Fluorescent Bulbs (special collection dates)

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
  • Bring items (except bulbs) to City Hall room 100 or during City Hall hours
  • Thermometers will be exchanged for a free digital thermometer.
  • Special collection at Chelsea City Yard 380 Beacham St. will be announced.
  • Bring any fluorescent bulbs as well as other mercury items
  • Thermostats and button batteries may be brought to City Hall, Room 100 for disposal ONLY
  • Look for Notice of Collection
No Broken Items

Propane Tanks

  • Propane Tanks that need to be retrofitted

Do Not Include
New NFPA regulations require that all propane tanks must have new safety equipment. 

Chelsea does not currently have a propane tank collection, these items can be brought to various locations for disposal: 

The point of purchase for a new propane tank such as Home Depot will often take the old tank for little to no cost.

Rechargeable Batteries

  • Any Rechargeable Battery with the Battery Recycling Seal

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
Bring items to City Hall room 310 during City Hall hours
  • No Automobile batteries
  • No batteries without the seal

Paint Swap Shed

  • Used Paint will be available for free
  • Oil-based paints
  • Paint Thinners
  • Stain and Varnish

How To Prepare

Do Not Include
  • Collection is on the first Saturday of every month from April through October
  • Bring to the City Yard at 380 Beacham St.
  • Hours: 8:00 AM - 12:00 noon
  • Keep in original container tightly sealed
  • Label contents if original labelis illegible
  • Pack Cans and bottles in carton or box
  • No Latex paint (Latex can be dryed with kitty litter or speedy dry and placed in regular trash)
  • No mixing items
  • No packing in trash bags
  • No creosote, wood preservatives or bleach
  • No unmarked or illegible containers
  • No solidified or pre-frozen paint or stain

Motor Oil

  • Used Motor Oil can Be Dropped Off

  • Collection is on the first Saturday of every month from April through October
  • Bring to the City Yard at 380 Beacham St.
  • Hours: 8:00 AM - 12:00 noon
No Antifreeze

Hazardous Waste

  • Hazardous Items other than paint, oil, white goods, CRTs or mercury items

Chelsea is having a Houshold Hazardous Waste Day collection ones a year. If you miss this date, please bring all items to: 


  • Clean Harbors in Braintree, call (781) 849-1800 for information to schedule a pickup
  • Products can be brought to the Minuteman Facility in Lexington, but must pay a fee for disposal. Contact the Lexington Board of Health at (781) 862-0500, Ext. 237 for more information.
