Chief Brian A. Kyes
 Chief Kyes was born and raised in the City of Chelsea. He was appointed as the City of Chelsea’s 18th Permanent Police Chief on November 8, 2007. He was originally appointed as a Patrol Officer for the Chelsea Police Department on May 18th of 1987. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on October 21, 1994 and subsequently promoted to Lieutenant on November 22, 0f 1996. As a Lieutenant he worked as
the first full-time Internal Affairs Investigator for the department from 1998 until 2002. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on January 30, 2002 where he acted in the capacity of the Criminal Investigation Division Commander and Public Information Officer for over five years until being elevated as the Department’s Chief of Police.
Chief Kyes holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics from Framingham State College (1987); a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College (1990); and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Suffolk University Law School in Boston (2002). He is a licensed Attorney at Law in this Commonwealth and a member of the Massachusetts Bar since June of 2003. He has also attended and completed a successful course of Law Enforcement Management at the FBI National Academy (Session No. 228) in Quantico, Virginia from January 6, 2007 through March 17, 2007. He is also a 1998 graduate of the 20th session of the Senior Management Institute for Police sponsored by Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and the Police Executive Research Forum. He is also a certified Police Ethics Instructor for the Massachusetts Police Training
Committee.
Chief Kyes served as Union President from 1993-1996 of what was formerly known as the Chelsea Police Improvement Association which at the time represented all ranks in the police department. He became Union President from 1996-1998 of the newly formed Chelsea Police Superior Association. He is an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, Massachusetts Major City Chiefs Association, and the Massachusetts Bar Association.
