Lock your Cars, and Watch Out for Your Neighbor’s Property!

The Chelsea Police Department has seen an increase in the past several months in property related crimes.  In particular, and much to our displeasure, two particular types of crimes have seen an increase.  The first is thefts from within motor vehicles. What makes this particularly disturbing to the police department is the fact that many of these vehicles have been left unlocked and valuable property was left inside in plain view in these unlocked vehicles. This is an open invitation to would be thieves and unfortunately it is a temptation that many of them cannot resist.  Please remember to lock your car whenever you are away from it for any length of time and do not leave items of value in plain sight inside your vehicle. If there is nothing to catch a thief's eye, they may not give your car a second look.

We are also seeing an increase in the theft of recyclable materials which can be converted into quick cash. In these troubling economic times, some people turn to drastic measures to make some quick cash. In particular, we have noticed an increase in the theft of aluminum and copper downspouts from rain gutters. While these thefts usually occur from unoccupied or vacant homes, there are still steps that we can take to prevent this type of theft.  Residents are reminded to keep a watchful eye on not only their own home, but to look out for their neighbor’s property as well.  This is true especially if you know they are at work or away on vacation for a period of time. Please call 911 if you see or hear anything suspicious. Don't attempt to investigate or intervene on your own. Please leave that to the trained members of the Chelsea Police Department. By being the all important eyes and ears of the community you are making a huge contribution to protecting our city against these and other types of crimes.

Remember, the only BAD call to the Police Department is the one that no one makes! Please remember that you are not bothering us....this is our job!
