Police Make Arrest in Assault and Robbery of Elderly Woman

        Tuesday January 19, 2010- The Chelsea Police Department announced today, that after a lengthy investigation, an arrest has been made in the December 28th, 2009 attack and robbery of an elderly female on Broadway.  Chelsea detectives arrested Jose Rivera age 24, of 182 Chestnut St, Chelsea this morning for Assault and Battery of a person over 60 with injury and Unarmed Robbery of a person over 60.

        On Monday December 28th at 8:40AM, officers responded to the MBTA bus stop at 350 Broadway and observed a 72 year old female suffering from head injuries. The victim told officers that while waiting for the bus she was attacked from behind and thrown to the ground while having her handbag forcibly removed from her grasp. The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical services for her injuries. Officers were able to secure a video from a local business that captured the attack from their surveillance system. This information was forwarded to Chelsea detectives who were able to establish probable cause to make the arrest after reviewing the video and interviewing witnesses.

        Jose Rivera was arraigned today in Chelsea District Court on robbery and assault charges and was ordered held without bail by Judge Diana L. Maldonado pending further proceedings.
