The Chelsea Police Department in their continued aggressive crackdown on graffiti in Chelsea has charged a 13 year old Chelsea juvenile with 31 counts of defacement of property. These properties included 16 counts of defacement against city parks. The investigation which is still on-going has resulted in damaged property throughout the city. Information received by School Resource Officer Stephanie McConaghy and a follow-up investigation conducted by Detective Efrain Gonzalez led to criminal complaint filed. According to Captain Keith Houghton “Evidence collected suggests this young juvenile was out tagging on a school night at 3:30AM.” He stressed “without parental knowledge of their children’s whereabouts our efforts are severely
impacted.”
In a related story, Chief Brian Kyes has announced a new three tier approach to proactively address this emerging problem that has affected Chelsea and most of Greater Boston. This new strategy entitled ‘Stop Bragging about Tagging” will focus on three areas: (1) Prevention, including continuous education and community involvement. (2) Enforcement and Prosecution, including a proposed reward program, and (3) Removal, quick removal of the graffiti with in 48 hours.
